Taking “Extra” Care of Patients and Giving Special Attention

It started with abdominal pain. Andrea Barrera explains that she’d been diagnosed in the past with an ovarian cyst, and when she suddenly began to feel familiar pain again last July, she became concerned. “I wanted to get it checked out to see if it was a cyst again or something else,” she says.

She went to the Emergency Department at Palmdale Regional because she’d been there a couple months earlier and was really happy with the treatment she received. “The waiting time at Palmdale Regional is better,” she says.

When she arrived at the hospital, she was reassured by the care and attention of the staff. To help keep patients safe during COVID-19, many safety measures have been implemented, such as UV light technology that kills germs once a room is unoccupied. “I kept seeing them cleaning,” Barrera remembers. “Every time they walked by, they asked, ‘Are you thirsty? Are you hungry?’ They pay attention to patients” and take “extra” care, she says.

If you’re having a medical emergency, call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency room.

After an ultrasound test, Barrera’s provider in the ER confirmed that she had an ovarian cyst. “They helped me immediately and gave me some pain relievers,” she says. “They also said that it would be better if someone picked me up, and they made sure that I was able to get a ride home.”

“After that I made an appointment with my OB-GYN,” she says. She had a follow-up ultrasound with her doctor, and the results were exactly the same as the ones from the ER, she says. She went back to her doctor about a month later for another ultrasound, and thankfully the cyst was gone.

Today, she’s doing great and is grateful for the swift emergency care that gave her relief from her pain and peace of mind. “It was very easy,” she says.

As the mom of a 1-year-old and a 4-year-old, she stays busy taking care of her family, and she was heartened by how the ER team took care of her. “I would totally recommend Palmdale Regional because of how they treat you and how they talk to you on a very professional level,” she says. “They take very good care of you.”
